    A Word of Wisdom: "Neighbor"

    A Word of Wisdom

    Written by: Krasel Morales

    “Neighbor”

    Greek Meaning

    πλησίον (Plēsion) (play-SEE-on)

    Definition:

One who is near. A fellow human being. A companion or another person with whom we live in relationship.

In Scripture, plēsion extends beyond someone who lives next door to anyone God places in our path. The word emphasizes proximity and relationship rather than merely location. A neighbor is someone God has called us to love, respect, and treat with integrity.

    English Meaning

A neighbor is a person living nearby or anyone with whom we interact in daily life.

Biblically, our neighbor includes family, fellow believers, coworkers, strangers, and even those who may be difficult to love. Every person God places in our path becomes an opportunity to reflect His love, grace, and truth.

    Personal Revelation

The Lord has been reminding me that loving my neighbor begins long before I serve them, it begins with how I see them.

It's easy to think of "neighbor" as someone who lives nearby or someone I naturally enjoy being around. But God keeps expanding my definition. My neighbor is the person standing in front of me today. It may be a family member who needs my patience, a coworker who is difficult to understand, a stranger I may never meet again, or someone who sees the world differently than I do. Each one is someone Christ loves deeply.

I've also realized that speaking the truth isn't just about avoiding lies. It's about allowing my words to reflect the heart of Jesus. There have been moments when I've been tempted to speak out of frustration, assumption, or self-protection. The Holy Spirit has gently reminded me that truth without love can wound, while love without truth can mislead. Christ calls me to speak both.

When I remember how patient, gracious, and truthful God has been with me, it changes the way I respond to others. The same mercy He extends to me each day becomes the mercy I want to extend to my neighbor. Every conversation becomes an opportunity to reflect His character.

Loving my neighbor is not simply another command to obey. It is an invitation to become more like Jesus.

    Key Scriptures

    Ephesians 4:25

"Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another."

Paul reminds believers that truthfulness strengthens the body of Christ. Because we belong to one another, honesty is not merely a virtue—it is an expression of God's love that builds trust and unity.

    Proverbs 12:22

"Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight."

God delights in people whose words reflect His truthful nature.

    Leviticus 19:18

"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Long before the New Testament, God established love for our neighbor as a defining characteristic of His people.

    Matthew 22:39

"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus reaffirmed this commandment, showing that love for God is inseparable from love for others.

    Ephesians 4:15

"...speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ."

Truth and love are never meant to compete. God's truth is always to be spoken with His love.

    Colossians 3:9

"Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds."

Honesty reflects the new life we have received through Christ.

    Action Step

This week, ask the Lord to help you see each person you encounter through His eyes.

Before speaking, pause and ask yourself:

    Are my words true?

    Are they loving?

Will they build trust and point someone closer to Christ?

Look for one intentional opportunity each day to encourage, serve, or speak life into someone God places in your path. As you practice loving your neighbor with both truth and grace, you'll become a clearer reflection of the One who first loved you.

    Prayer

    Father,

Thank You for loving me so completely and for calling me to love others as You have loved me. Thank You for showing me that every person I encounter is someone You created, someone You value, and someone You invite me to treat with truth, grace, and compassion.

Help me see my neighbor through Your eyes instead of my own. Guard my words from dishonesty, impatience, and pride, and teach me to speak truth with gentleness and love. May every conversation reflect Your character and bring encouragement, healing, and peace.

Continue transforming my heart so that loving others becomes a natural overflow of experiencing Your love. Let my life point people to Jesus in both my words and my actions.

In the mighty, matchless, and majestic name of Jesus,

    Amen.

Until next time, may the Word become wisdom, and wisdom become the way you live.
